Saturday May 13th will go down as one of the most successful athletic days in Westwood’s early history as the Boys and Girls Track and Field teams put on a show that will not soon be forgotten.
Coach Corey Head played around with numbers all week and new his girls could finish anywhere in the top five pending the outcome of the events on Friday and Saturday. Kayla Racine would start things off for the Redhawks on Friday finishing 5th in the Shot Put to get her team some valuable points. Early Saturday morning, the girls 4×100 would finish 5th in the first girls event and from there it would be the Diamond Rush and Jasmine Brown show as each would win Individual State Championships for their teams to give them valuable points. Rush would win the 100m and 200m races while, Brown would take home the gold in the Long Jump. Later in the day the 4 x 400 relay team would finish eighth to earn the final points for the team. The team would go on to place a school best 4th in the State for their best ever finish.
Coach Rod Lorick had also been looking at numbers all week and he too felt very good about the teams chances going in to the weekend. The Region Champion Redhawks started off the State Meet with an 8th place finish on Friday’s 4 x 800 race. However, on Saturday morning, the day would begin with the state’s 6th best all time 4 x100 time with the Redhawks winning the day’s first competition. Team members on that 4 x 100 team were Kaden Briggs, Torran Goings, Dermonti Romey, and Trini Feggett. Next, it would be the more of the same for Kaden Briggs as he would win the 400 High Hurdles, and the 110 High Hurdles giving him one of the best performances of any male Redhawk in school history. The Horn Brothers (Christian and Brian) would also score some important points for the Redhawks as Christian finished 3rd in the 400m and Brian finished 6th in the 110 High Hurdles, and both were on the 4 x 400 Relay team that finished 4th overall. Trini Feggett and Dermonti Romey would also score some more valuable points in the Long Jump event as Feggett finished 3rd while Romey finished 5th in the competition. The Redhawks would finish the day for a school best State Runner-Up finish behind state champion Hilton Head.
We are very proud of both teams in their accomplishments this weekend and the way they represented our school this past weekend!
