Redhawks News · Winter Sports Update

It is that time of year as our Winter Sports Teams enter into Region play this week. Here is a recap of their results during the Christmas break.

The Redhawks played in the inaugural Cardinal Newman showcase on December 16th where they took on top SCISA contender Cardinal Newman and pulled away late to take a 68-62 victory. Mya Belton led the way in this game with a double-double (16 points and 11 rebounds). After Christmas, the Redhawks played in the Elite Division of the Carolina Invitational in Charleston where they took on perennial West Virginia power Wyoming East High. Wyoming East gave the Redhawks their first defeat of the year 56-55 in the first round sending the Redhawks to the losers bracket. From there, the Redhawks went on to demolish Roswell High and Madison High to take 5th place in the tournament. Congratulations to Unique Drake who was named to the All-Tournament team. The Redhawks open up Region play on the road at RNE on Friday January 4th at 6:00pm.

On December 18th,  Redhawks made a return trip to the Charlotte Spectrum Center (home of the Charlotte Hornets) to take on the Hammond Skyhawks. This game went back and forth throughout all the way to the last second, where Hammond would knock down a three-point basket with 2 seconds remaining to come away with the win. After the game, both teams were treated to an NBA game as the Hornets took on the New York Knicks. Later that week, the Redhawks traveled to North Augusta to participate in their Christmas tournament. In game 1, the Redhawks took on Dutch Fork and came away with a 60-44 victory. In the semi-finals, the Redhawks took on Tennessee perennial power, The McCallie School from Chatanooga and played them tough all the way down to the last minute of the game. The McCallie School pulled away late to come away with the hard fought win and send the Redhawks to the Consolation Championship. In the Consolation Championship, the Redhawks fought off a scrappy Silver Bluff squad to take home 3rd place in the tournament. Congratulations to Russell Jones Jr. and Tahjay Dunlap for being named to the All-Tournament team. The Redhawks take on RNE Friday at RNE with the tip at 7:30pm.

The Redhawks have been competing at a high level against some stiff competition to get ready for the region matches that will determine their playoff fate. On December 15th and 16th, The Redhawks took 5th place at the Lugoff-Elgin tournament and then on the 22nd hosted the 5th annual Clash at the Castle where they took 4th place. In the latest rankings, the Redhawks were ranked 9th in 4A as they prepare to compete for a region championship. Bryce Harkness, Joshua Heyward, and Sky Davis continue to wrestle well and are big leaders on the team. The Redhawks will have a tournament this weekend at Rock Hill and will then have a pivotal quad-match on January 10th at South Pointe which could determine the Region Champion.
