As we close the books on another school year let’s take a look at the top 10 Redhawk Athletic moments of the 2018-19 School Year.
#10 GIRLS TENNIS— On October 18, 2018 at an away match vs. Richland Northeast the Girls team avenged an earlier season loss by winning 5-1 to secure the 3rd and final playoff spot. Led by Kyndall Ragins and Meera Rogers the Redhawks would go on to host the school’s first ever home playoff tennis match where they came up short versus Blue Ridge by a score of 4-2. Next year’s team returns a strong nucleus and hopes to advance further in next year’s playoffs!
#9 BOYS GOLF–In a span of two days, Senior Kendall Wallace would shoot a 73 to win the Blazer Invitational and then on the very next day would shoot a 9 hole school record of 34 to help lead the Redhawks to a win over Spring Valley. Kendall had an amazing career in his 6 years of competing for the Redhawks. He will continue his golf career at the University of North Carolina Central.
#8 SOFTBALL–On April 11, 2019 the Redhawk Softball team secured the school’s first ever Softball playoff spot with a win over Ridge View. The team made up of mostly freshmen and middle school girls completed the best season in school history. Their season would come to an end after a heart breaking loss to AC Flora in the first round of the playoffs and a shutout loss to Daniel High in the losers bracket of the 4A playoffs.
#7 VOLLEYBALL–On October 18, 2018 the Redhawks avenged an earlier season defeat to the South Pointe Stallions by winning 3-1 and repeating as Region III Champions. The Redhawks would go on to get upset in the 2nd round of the State Playoffs by Daniel High. The Redhawks look to reload next year after losing key starters but the JV team also won the region for the second year in a row going undefeated in region play.
#6 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY–On October 18, 2018 the Boys Cross Country team won the school’s 1st ever Region Championship at the always tough Sandhills Course. Senior Paul McCants led the team throughout the season but was closely followed by Jordan Alexander-Coleman and a host of underclassmen who all show great promise in a possible repeat performance this upcoming season. The team went on to finish in the top 15 at the State Championships and McCants was chosen to the State Cross Country Shrine Bowl team. He will continue his Cross Country and Track Career at Meridian Community College.
#5 ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT–On March 12, 2019 the Westwood Athletic Department was presented the Award of Excellence for Sportsmanship, Integrity, and Ethics by the South Carolina High School League. This was the 4th time (3rd consecutive) in 5 years that the Athletic Department has been recognized for their exemplary display of Sportsmanship as we were one of only nine schools in the state to receive this honor and the only school from Richland Two to receive the honor.
#4 FOOTBALL--On August 24, 2019 the Redhawks defeated the Blythewood Bengals for the 4th time (2nd consecutive) in 5 years by a score of 18-7 to keep the AXE home for another year. The Redhawk defense caused problems all night for the Bengals, while Ahmon Green would have a big game for the Redhawks on the offensive side of the ball. Joe Washington would seal the win on a pick 6 in the 4th quarter to secure the victory.
#3 GIRLS BASKETBALL–On February 8, 2019 the Redhawks convincingly defeated the Ridge View Blazers to secure the Region III-4A Championship for the 2nd consecutive season and guaranteeing home court throughout the playoffs. The Redhawks would be defeated in the Upper State Championship for the 2nd year in a row finishing with a school record 24 wins.
#2 BOYS BASKETBALL–On February 8, 2019 Ahmon Green would make a decision to leave his man and take a charge on the final play of the game to secure the win for the Redhawks over eventual state champion Ridge View. The game was played in front of a record crowd and the win helped give the Redhawks a share of the Region Championship for the 2nd consecutive season. The Redhawks would go on to finish with a school record 25 wins before losing to Greenville in the 2nd round of the State Playoffs.
#1 BOYS TRACK–For the 3rd Year in a row the Boys Track team wins the honor of most memorable Redhawk Sports Moment. On May 11, 2019 the Boys Track team would finish 3rd in the State and this would be the 3rd year in a row finishing in the top 3 as a team. Christian Horn won 2 State Championships on this day by winning the 400m race and was a part of the 4 x 400m State Champion relay team that also consisted of Rayshawn Floyd, Paul McCants, and Robert Johnson. This Redhawk track team continues to excel each year and has made itself known as one of the state’s perennial title contenders.
